📷 The Pixel Width Guide — Why Characters Alone Are Not Enough

Google measures meta title display in pixels, not characters. A title with 60 narrow characters (like "iii") fits easily. A 55-character title full of wide letters ("WWWW") may still truncate. Our tool estimates pixel width to give you the most accurate preview possible.

Why It Matters

Meta Tags Are Your SERP Advertisement

Your meta title and description are what billions of searchers read before deciding whether to visit your site. Optimise them or lose clicks to competitors who do.

The Most Underestimated On-Page SEO Element

Most SEOs spend hours on content, links, and technical fixes — then write their meta title in 30 seconds. That is backwards. Your meta title is the headline of your Google ad, and your description is the copy below it. Both appear on every single impression your page receives.

A 1% improvement in click-through rate from better meta tags compounds across thousands of impressions. For a page receiving 5,000 monthly impressions, moving from a 3% to a 5% CTR means 100 additional free clicks per month — permanently.

  • Meta title is a confirmed direct Google ranking signal
  • Well-written descriptions improve CTR without changing rankings
  • Higher CTR signals relevance and can improve position over time
  • Google rewrites 71% of title tags — optimised ones survive more often
  • Keywords in descriptions are bolded by Google when they match the query

🤖 Meta Tags in the AI Search Era

AI-powered search engines including Google SGE, ChatGPT Browse, Perplexity, and Bing Copilot all use your meta title as a primary signal for understanding what your page is about. A well-written, keyword-rich title tag is one of the fastest ways to improve how AI systems categorise and surface your content.

🌎
Google SGE: Uses your title tag as a primary entity label when deciding which pages to cite in AI Overviews.
🔍
Perplexity AI: Pulls title and description to create source citations — optimised tags get cleaner attribution.
🤖
ChatGPT Browse: Uses meta title as the anchor label when referencing your page in generated responses.
🐱
Bing Copilot: Surfaces meta descriptions verbatim in answer cards — keyword-rich descriptions improve inclusion.
Avoid These

6 Meta Tag Mistakes That Kill Your CTR

Google will truncate, rewrite, or ignore meta tags with these errors. Our AI avoids all of them automatically.

Title Too Long — Gets Truncated

Writing a meta title over 60 characters (or ~580px wide) means Google cuts it with "..." in the SERP. Users see an incomplete, unprofessional headline. The most important words at the end — often the brand or unique value — disappear entirely.

Keep titles between 50–60 characters. Front-load the keyword so even if truncation occurs, the most important word survives.

Keyword Buried at the End

Placing your primary keyword at position 40+ in the title wastes its ranking signal. Google weights words earlier in the title more heavily. Users also scan left-to-right — a keyword buried at the end is often not seen before they decide to click or scroll.

Always front-load your primary keyword. Aim for the first 1–3 words of the title. Save brand name for the very end after a separator (| or —).

Generic Description With No CTA

"We offer SEO services to help you rank higher" is a generic description that appears on thousands of sites. It has no hook, no proof, and no reason to click. Without a CTA or benefit signal, it performs at the floor of its click potential regardless of position.

Every description needs one action verb (Learn, Discover, Start, Get), one proof signal (number, credential, client count), and one benefit. Our AI builds all three in automatically.

Duplicate Meta Tags Across Pages

Using the same meta title and description across multiple pages tells Google you have not differentiated your content. It also makes it impossible for users to distinguish pages in the SERP. Google treats this as thin or duplicate content at the meta level.

Every page needs a unique meta title and description. Use this generator once per page with that page's specific keyword and topic — never copy tags across pages.

Description Too Short — Google Rewrites

Descriptions under 80 characters give Google almost no guidance on what to show. In 71% of cases, Google rewrites meta descriptions when they are deemed insufficient. The auto-generated replacement is typically pulled from random page body text — often not the best copy on the page.

Write descriptions of 140–160 characters. This length gives Google enough content to display fully while remaining short enough to avoid truncation.

Keyword Stuffing in Title or Description

Repeating the same keyword multiple times in the meta title ("SEO Agency | SEO Services | Best SEO") is both a user experience failure and a potential spam signal. Google is adept at recognising keyword manipulation and may filter or demote such listings in the SERP.

Use the primary keyword once in the title, naturally. In the description, use the keyword once plus a related term (LSI keyword) for semantic richness. Our AI handles this balance automatically.
FAQ

Meta Titles & Descriptions — Every Question Answered

Comprehensive answers optimised for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

A meta title (also called a title tag) is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. It appears as the clickable blue headline in Google search results, the text in your browser tab, and the default text when a page is shared on social media. The meta title is one of the most significant on-page SEO ranking factors — Google uses it to understand what a page is about and match it to relevant search queries. A well-optimised meta title should be 50–60 characters long, front-load the primary keyword, include a unique value proposition or differentiator, and end with the brand name. Writing strong meta titles is one of the fastest on-page SEO improvements you can make without changing the page content.
A meta description is an HTML attribute that provides a brief summary of a web page's content. It appears in Google search results beneath the blue title link and URL. Google has confirmed that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor in the traditional sense — they do not directly boost your position in the SERP. However, they have a significant indirect impact: a well-written, keyword-rich meta description improves click-through rate (CTR), and higher CTR sends a relevance signal to Google that can contribute to improved rankings over time. Additionally, Google bolds keywords in the description that match the search query, making keyword-aligned descriptions visually stand out in competitive SERPs.
The recommended meta title length is 50–60 characters. However, Google technically measures title display in pixels, not characters. Google's desktop SERP displays approximately 580 pixels of title width before truncating with an ellipsis (...). On mobile, the display width is narrower at approximately 470–512 pixels. Since different characters have different widths (a capital W is much wider than a lowercase i), a 55-character title with many wide letters may truncate, while a 62-character title using narrow letters may display fully. Our AI generator targets the 50–60 character sweet spot automatically and our checker provides a pixel-width estimate so you can gauge truncation risk before publishing.
The optimal meta description length is 140–160 characters. Google displays approximately 920 pixels of description text on desktop before truncating. For mobile, the limit is closer to 680 pixels, which typically means 120–130 characters display fully. Writing descriptions at 140–160 characters ensures maximum real estate on desktop while remaining safe for mobile display. Descriptions under 80 characters are often too short for Google to display meaningfully — Google frequently rewrites short descriptions by pulling text from the page body, which is rarely better than what you would write intentionally.
Google rewrites approximately 71% of meta title tags and frequently replaces meta descriptions that it deems insufficient. Google rewrites titles when: the title is too long or truncated; the title does not accurately match the page content; the title uses keyword stuffing or appears manipulative; or a different text element on the page is judged more relevant to the search query. To minimise rewriting, write titles that precisely match the page's primary topic, stay within 60 characters, avoid repetition, and ensure the title genuinely reflects the page content. Well-written, contextually accurate titles are rewritten far less frequently than keyword-stuffed or generic ones.
Yes — including your brand name in the meta title is recommended, but placement matters significantly. Brand name should appear at the end of the title, after the keyword and value proposition, separated by a pipe (|) or em dash (—). Placing the brand name first pushes the keyword further right, reducing its prominence as a ranking signal and as the first thing a user reads. The exception is your homepage, where brand name first can work for branded search intent. For all other pages — service pages, blog posts, product pages — structure as: [Primary Keyword] — [Differentiator] | [Brand Name].
AI-generated meta titles and descriptions can significantly help SEO when used correctly. Google does not penalise AI-generated meta tags — it evaluates them on the same criteria as human-written ones: relevance, accuracy, length, and keyword presence. The advantage of AI-generated meta tags is consistency and optimisation: AI reliably front-loads keywords, stays within character limits, includes CTAs, and avoids common errors like keyword stuffing or thin descriptions. The key is to review and personalise AI-generated tags before publishing — add specific numbers, brand voice, or page-specific details that generic AI tools might miss. Our tool provides 5 variations specifically so you can choose and refine the best fit for each page.
In WordPress, meta titles and descriptions are typically managed through an SEO plugin. With Yoast SEO, open any post or page, scroll to the Yoast SEO panel at the bottom, click the "SEO" tab, and enter your title in the "SEO title" field and your description in the "Meta description" field. With Rank Math, open the post, click the Rank Math icon in the top toolbar, navigate to the "General" tab, and enter your title and description. With All in One SEO, use the AIOSEO Settings panel beneath the post editor. Without a plugin, add your tags manually in your theme's header.php inside the head tag using the standard HTML meta tags. Our generator outputs are ready to paste directly into any of these fields.
The meta title (title tag) and H1 heading serve different purposes and appear in different locations. The meta title lives in the HTML head section and is visible in the browser tab, Google SERP, and social shares — but not on the page itself. The H1 heading is the main visible headline on the page that users read after clicking through. They do not need to be identical. The meta title is optimised for search and click-through rate (keyword-first, under 60 characters). The H1 can be longer, more descriptive, and written for the reader who has already arrived. Both should contain the primary keyword, but the meta title prioritises it more aggressively. SEO best practice is one H1 per page that expands naturally on the meta title's promise.
