What is sameAs in schema markup?

sameAs is a Schema.org property that lists the official profiles of a person or organization, such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Wikidata and Wikipedia. It tells search engines and AI systems that all these profiles belong to the same entity, which helps Google connect your website to its Knowledge Graph.

The basics

What is entity schema?

Entity schema is structured data that describes who is behind a website: a person, a company or both. It uses the Schema.org Person and Organization types to state facts such as name, logo, founder, description and official profiles in a format machines can read without guessing.

Regular schema describes a page, such as an article or a product. Entity schema describes the identity behind every page. It is one of the clearest signals you control for Google's Knowledge Graph, Knowledge Panels and AI answers. For page-level schema, use our Schema Markup Generator.

What are the most common entity schema mistakes?

Duplicate Organization blocks

Themes, SEO plugins and custom code each output their own Organization schema. Keep one, with one @id.

Links to posts, not profiles

sameAs must point to a profile page, not a single post, video or tweet.

Inconsistent names

Use the exact same name in schema, on your website and across all profiles.

Founder not connected

Link the founder's Person schema to the Organization with founder and worksFor so Google sees the relationship.

Changing @id values

Your @id is a permanent identifier. Choose one, such as yoursite.com/#organization, and never change it.

Facts that do not match the page

Schema should describe what visitors can also see. Hidden or exaggerated claims can be ignored.

Step by step

How do I add entity schema to WordPress?

  1. Scan your site first. Use the duplicate check above to see what your theme and plugins already output.
  2. Choose one source. Either complete the Organization details in Yoast or Rank Math, or turn their Organization output off and use your own code. Do not run both.
  3. Match the @id. If you keep Yoast, use https://yoursite.com/#organization as the @id in any custom code so both describe the same entity.
  4. Add the code. Paste the JSON-LD into your homepage and About page with a header and footer plugin such as WPCode, or in a custom HTML block.
  5. Test it. Run the page through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator.
  6. Keep it updated. Add new profiles to sameAs and update the logo or description whenever they change.

FAQ

Entity schema and sameAs: frequently asked questions

Entity schema basics

What is entity schema?

Entity schema is structured data that describes who is behind a website, using Schema.org types such as Person and Organization. It states facts like name, logo, founder, description and official profiles in a format search engines and AI systems can read reliably.

What is sameAs in schema markup?

sameAs is a Schema.org property that lists URLs of official profiles for the same person or organization, such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Wikidata and Wikipedia. It helps search engines confirm that all those profiles describe one entity.

Does entity schema help get a Google Knowledge Panel?

It helps, but it does not guarantee one. Google builds Knowledge Panels from many sources. Clean entity schema with strong sameAs links makes it easier for Google to connect your website to its Knowledge Graph and confirm facts about you.

Does entity schema help with AI search and LLMs?

Structured data gives AI systems clear, consistent facts about your brand. Combined with consistent profiles and independent coverage, it reduces the chance of AI tools confusing you with someone else or describing you incorrectly.

What is the difference between Person and Organization schema?

Person schema describes an individual, such as a founder, author or artist. Organization schema describes a company, brand or group. Founders and companies should each have their own schema, linked with the founder and worksFor properties.

Creating and adding the code

Which profiles should I include in sameAs?

Include official profiles you control or that are clearly about you: Wikidata, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, Instagram, Facebook and Crunchbase, plus industry profiles such as Spotify, IMDb or ORCID where relevant. Link to profile pages, not individual posts.

How many sameAs links should I add?

There is no required number. Most strong entities list between 3 and 10 official profiles. A few accurate, authoritative links are better than a long list of weak ones.

Where should I put entity schema on my website?

Add Organization schema to your homepage and Person schema to the About or author page that best describes the person. Use the same @id values everywhere so search engines know every reference points to the same entity.

What is @id in schema markup?

@id is a unique identifier for an entity within your structured data, usually written as your domain followed by a fragment, such as https://example.com/#organization. It lets other schema blocks reference the same entity instead of creating a duplicate.

How do I add entity schema to WordPress?

Paste the generated JSON-LD into your homepage or About page using a header and footer plugin such as WPCode or a custom HTML block. If you use Yoast SEO or Rank Math, either complete their Organization settings or turn that output off so you do not create duplicates.

Will this conflict with Yoast SEO or Rank Math?

It can if both output an Organization for the same site. This generator uses the same @id format as Yoast, https://yoursite.com/#organization, which reduces conflicts. Scan your site with the tool above to see what is already there.

Troubleshooting

Why do I have multiple Organization schema blocks?

Themes, SEO plugins and custom code often each add their own Organization schema. This can send conflicting signals. Keep one complete block with a single @id and remove or disable the others.

Should I add my Google Knowledge Graph ID to schema?

If you already have one, you can add it as an identifier and as a Google search link in sameAs. It helps tie your website to the existing Knowledge Graph entity. Find your ID with our Knowledge Panel checker.

How do I test my entity schema?

Run your page through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator. They show whether the code is valid and which entities are detected.

Can wrong schema hurt my website?

Invalid or misleading structured data is usually ignored rather than penalized, but schema that contradicts your visible content or describes fake information can violate Google's structured data guidelines. Keep every fact accurate and visible on the page.
